Plaid Cymru Leader Leanne Wood has become the first political leader in Wales to publish her tax return.
The Rhondda-based politician took the step after the controversy dogging the UK Prime Minister in the wake of the 'Panama Papers' scandal and connections he had to inherited money from a tax haven. The link to Ms Wood's published tax return can be found by clicking this link.
Ms Wood, who lives in Penygraig, said: “It is right that the UK Prime Minister faces scrutiny over his tax affairs; especially when he was so reluctant to reveal the truth when questions first emerged. Failure to be open about tax affairs will lead to people asking ‘what has he got to hide?’
“I have nothing to hide, and to try to promote openness and transparency and trust in politics, as a political leader, I have taken the step of publishing my tax return on social media. It’s not something I have done before but it’s something I feel is necessary after the events of the past week.
“Trust is low in politics and politicians. I hope the controversy regarding the Tory Prime Minister does not put off or further alienate people from taking part in the political process on May 5th when there are important elections for Wales.
"I would urge people who are angry by this latest scandal to be channel that anger into voting on May 5th as it is the only way we can make the changes we need in this country to make progress.”
