Plaid Cymru leader and Rhondda AM Leanne Wood said: “It is great that it has finally dawned on the Labour Government in Wales that there is a need to focus their attention on the valleys.
“Plaid Cymru has been demanding a valleys-focussed economic strategy, with jobs being brought closer to our communities. We are talking about one of the birthplaces of world industry.
"It is vital that our valleys communities are given the respect they deserve, and that genuine opportunities are created for local people.
"We’ve said that the City Region Deal must begin its job creation and improved infrastructure work on the outskirts where the employment and spending is needed more.
“It is vital that this initiative doesn’t get added to the list of previous broken promises and failed projects. While this is not the time for cynicism, the Labour Government must be held to account on whether any of this gets delivered.
"Plaid Cymru will campaign relentlessly for economic revival of the former coalfield.”
