Rhondda AM Leanne Wood has welcomed the u-turn by the Labour Government in Wales to abolish the school uniform grant.
The Plaid Cymru Leader said the Government had finally done the right thing after deciding to scrap the scheme which provides financial assistance to families struggling to afford the cost of school uniforms.
The change of heart follows months of campaigning and heavy pressure on Ministers in the Senedd by Plaid Cymru. Locally, Ms Wood had written to all schools in the Rhondda to find out their policy on school uniform and what help they provide for families unable to afford uniform.
“It is great to hear that the Labour Government have finally comes to their senses on the school uniform grant,” said Ms Wood. “The original decision to scrap this scheme, which caused worry for families and left Welsh councils having to try and identify the shortfall from their budgets, made no sense at all.
“Plaid Cymru has made a powerful and overwhelming case for the decision to be overturned. It is pleasing to see that all that hard work has resulted in the enhanced nature of the replacement scheme.
“In recent months we have seen Labour Ministers ape their Tory counterparts in Westminster and this was a prime example of it.
“This is a case of better late than never but it does beg the question of how the Labour Government could contemplate targeting the most disadvantaged families for cost-cutting measures in the first place.”
