Leanne Wood has wished the Rhondda’s first Youth Parliament member good luck following their success in the first ever elections for the new institution.
The Rhondda AM said she looked forward to working with Ysgol Gyfun Cymer pupil Alys Hall to improve local communities and ensure young people’s voices are heard.
The results of the inaugural Youth Parliament elections were announced at the beginning of plenary this afternoon by Presiding Officer Elin Jones AM.
Following the results, Leanne said: “I would like to wish Alys all the best during her tenure as representative for Rhondda. This is an important job to do because the youth of Wales have been denied a voice for too long. Now we finally have a Youth Parliament for Wales this anomaly has been rectified.
“There are many issues affecting young people in Wales. It is great that we have a new representative now to take these forward on behalf of the young people of the Rhondda. I would also like to thank everyone who took part in these elections; from the organisers, to the unsuccessful candidates and everyone who voted for the first time.
“I am hoping this institution will encourage debate among youth people in Wales and foster an interest in politics that will be vital for the health of our democracy.”
