“Over the past week I have obtained information that shows the Welsh Government has made no approach, formal or informal, to take control of the Rhondda Tunnel.
“This information came from David Brewer, a Director in the Network Delivery and Development department of Highways England which is the body which currently has ownership of the tunnel.
“I am incensed that this vital project to regenerate the Rhondda and Afan valleys has lost momentum because the Welsh Government failed to ask for the tunnel’s ownership to be transferred.
“The Rhondda Tunnel Society has been frustrated in its efforts to obtain grants to progress the reopening of the tunnel in recent months because of the question mark over ownership. To now discover that the Welsh Government has made no formal or informal approach to Highways England is astonishing.
“What makes things worst is that it is clear from the response I have received from Highways England that they are only too happy to hand over control of the Rhondda Tunnel to the Welsh Government. They cannot do this until they are approached however.
“While I share the anger of other Rhondda Tunnel Society members over this sorry episode, I urge the Labour Welsh Government to right a wrong and get on the case with approaching Highways England as a matter of urgency.
“Too much time and momentum has already been lost through Government inactivity – they need to assume responsibility and do what they should have done months ago.”
