Leanne has criticised RCT Council for proposing to close a swimming pool in the constituency.
The Assembly Member for the Rhondda said Labour’s plans to shut the pool at the Rhondda Fach leisure centre in Tylorstown will make it harder for people to be “fit and active.”
The proposal was contained within a Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council cabinet report which will be discussed in a cabinet meeting this Thursday. The report suggests that the closure of the pool will save the local authority £100,000 a year.
“Many people in the Fach feel let down by this proposal – and rightly so,” said Leanne. “Just like they did in Treherbert, a Labour council is taking away yet another swimming pool from the people of the Rhondda. This will only make it harder for people to access leisure facilities and be fit and active.
“The cabinet report claims that people have access to the pool at Ferndale Community School but that is only true for a limited time in the evenings after school has finished.
“Anyone wanting to swim in the day is left with a lengthy journey to Porth or over the mountain to Ystrad. That will clearly put a significant number of people off.”
Ms Wood added: “In their election manifesto from just four months ago, Labour pledged to ‘continue to invest in the modernisation of these (leisure) facilities to ensure we do all we can to make RCT a healthy and active county.’
“The people of the Rhondda can judge for themselves if they have kept this promise or not. Plaid Cymru will be making strong representations to the Labour cabinet for them to think again.”
