The Rhondda AM has welcomed the news that a bridge will reopen to traffic later this year.
Leanne Wood AM received the news about the Pont Rhondda Bridge Deck replacement following a street surgery in Llwynypia earlier this summer. A number of local people raised the problems associated with the bridge renovation and the delays to the work caused by problems with the original contractor.
Following representations from Llwynypia residents, Leanne wrote to the Labour-controlled RCT Council who were responsible for commissioning the works. In a reply sent late last month, council leader Andrew Morgan said: “Thank you for your recent letter with regard to the bridge at the above location, requesting an update on progress and an estimation on when the bridge will be re-opened to traffic.
“I am pleased to advise that works to the abutments should be complete by the end of next week, on completion of these works construction of the new bridge deck will commence. The re-opening of the bridge is scheduled for late Autumn.
In response, Leanne said: “The end is in sight for the reopening of this key piece of infrastructure for Llwynypia and that will come as a big relief for local residents.
“Many of the streets currently have only one access point and this has caused a lot of traffic problems for the duration of the bridge’s closure.
“Concerns were raised on the doorstep during a street surgery there about accessibility for emergency vehicles as well. I know local businesses were also impacted.
“It is unfortunate that it has taken so long to repair the bridge but it is good news that this long running saga is finally coming to an end.”
