Rhondda AM Leanne Wood has welcomed the reopening of three paddling pools over the summer holidays.
The paddling pools of Penygraig, Treorci and Maerdy will be open thanks to the efforts of local volunteers. This comes just a few years after the Labour local authority closed them down as part of cost-cutting measures.
Penygraig was opened last summer for the first time to great success by the Friends of Penygraig Paddling Pool – a group which includes local Plaid Cymru councillors. Treorci Paddling Pool will also open for the first time thanks to a group including local Plaid Cymru councillors and members.
Plaid Cymru Leader Leanne Wood said: “I am pleased to see that Treorci and Maerdy paddling pools will be joining Penygraig’s in reopening this summer. When Penygraig paddling pool reopened for the first time I said that it was a model that could be rolled out across the Rhondda – and that is exactly what is happening now.
“This is all down to people power. Volunteers in each of these communities have stepped forward with a steely determination and worked very hard to deliver a real asset for local people.
“Thanks to them families will now have the opportunity to undertake some free fun over the summer holiday. At a time when household budgets are being squeezed, this free fun for the family is important; long may it continue.”
