The Rhondda AM has congratulated a local pub for winning a prestigious national award.
The Pencelli Hotel in Treorci was awarded the title of the ‘Best Cider Pub in Wales’ by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA). Leanne Wood AM visited the pub to see the landlord and landlady, Neil and Mary Fisher, being presented with the award by CAMRA.
It is not the first time that the pub has collected industry accolades. In 2017, it won CAMRA’s pub of the year for Mid Glamorgan and Cider & Perry Pub of the Year for Mid Glamorgan.
That was the second time they won CAMRA’s pub of the year for Mid Glamorgan – the previous year they became the first pub in the Rhondda to collect the title.
Leanne said: “The Pencelli is an excellent pub and this award is richly deserved. There is always a warm welcome at this cosy pub and the wide selection of ales and ciders behind the bar always makes it a worthwhile trip.
“Neil, Mary and the rest of the family have done a great job of bringing this pub back to life and turning it into a real community hub. This latest award is testament to all the hard work the Fisher family have put into this asset for the Rhondda.”
Leanne added: “Pubs like this are more than just a place to buy a drink; they’re a place to have a chat, seek advice and make friends. We keep hearing that it is getting harder and harder to keep pubs open due to a dwindling trade.
“It is incumbent on us to support pubs like the Pencelli so they can carry on being hubs of the community and providing a place for people to meet and socialise.”
