Leanne Wood was part of the official unveiling of a baby grand piano which will be used to entertain patients at a hospital in the Rhondda.
The Member of the Senedd for the Rhondda put an appeal out on social media after seeing that a nurse at Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda – Nikkita Williams – wanted a piano for music therapy for patients.
The appeal was seen by a teacher at Ferndale Community School where there was an old piano surplus to requirements. After the small matter of transporting the large instrument across the Fach to Llwynypia was arranged, the piano was finally unveiled.
Leanne said: “I was thrilled to be able to be part of the effort to get a piano for the patients of Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda. I am told by nurses that this will make a big difference to patients there as music can lift the spirits for people in ways that nothing else can.
“The way in which the community responded to this appeal was spectacular. We had an offer of three pianos in a matter of hours. One local business offered to buy a second hand one after seeing the appeal.
“The hospital opted for the baby grand piano from the school and they’ve made a great choice.”
Leanne added: “Getting the piano to the hospital was a real team effort and showed the best that the Rhondda and the surrounding area has to offer.
“It was a pleasure to see and hear this being played in the hospital during its unveiling. The look of joy on the faces of staff and patients at the hospital made the effort all worthwhile.
“Well done to Nikkita Williams and her colleagues for pulling off a fantastic project.”
