Crown Carveries

I am signing this petition as I would like to call on Crown Carveries to change the name of the ‘Lord Tonypandy’ pub.

 Aberfan.JPG

The Aberfan disaster killed 116 children and 28 adults, and a series of recently aired Aberfan 50th anniversary programmes has clearly shown the scandalous part Lord Tonypandy played, in his role as Secretary of State for Wales, in using the disaster appeal fund money to clean up the Aberfan tips. This was an unforgivable and cruel act against the people and community of Aberfan.

Fifty years may have passed but feelings still run strong.  I no longer want the Rhondda to be associated with the name of Lord Tonypandy.

Tell us what YOU think the pub should be called. Use the comments box below, and we'll run a vote to find the most popular.

It would be better if suggestions for a new name would be limited to the good people of the Rhondda.

The Cwtch, or The Pandy Cwtch. Also change the George Thomas hospital to The Annie Powell.

As a commercial business, Crown Carveries should not associate themselves with a man who is despised locally and nationally in Wales. George Thomas was a contentious and divisive figure whose dubious reputation has been totally destroyed by the full truth of his actions after the Aberfan disaster being made public. Why not use the refurbishment to create a new feel to the pub and call it after someone or something that local people are proud of. Personally, I’d suggest calling it after Tommy Farr, the Tonypandy boxer who bravely fought for the world heavyweight championship against Joe Louis and who is revered in the valley. By having images and memorabilia of Farr in the pub, you’d instill far more pride in your establishment amongst the locals and you’d also attract visitors from way beyond the Rhondda, wanting to pay tribute to that great son of Tonypandy.

It’s high time Crown Carveries realised the strength of feeling against George Thomas in the Rhondda. His name must be removed from their establishment, he isn’t a ‘son of the Rhondda’, he’s an embarrassment who, when it mattered, turned on the people he was meant to protect.
