Plaid Cymru Leader Leanne Wood has taken part in a ten mile walk through the Rhondda to raise money for a cancer charity.
The Rhondda AM joined hundreds of people to take in some of the finest views in the valley as part of Macmillan Cancer Support’s annual fundraiser in the Rhondda.
The circular walk was in aid of the new £7m Y Bwthyn unit earmarked for the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant. Macmillan are contributing £5m towards the cost in what will be their biggest investment in Wales.
Leanne completed the walk in just over three hours in sweltering conditions. Afterwards, she said: “It was a gruelling event in the hot weather but it was so rewarding. The atmosphere throughout the walk was so uplifting.
“Just as everyone was flagging around the eight mile mark, the Tonypandy Girl Guides group gave us a great welcome when we walked through the town which summed up the positive atmosphere throughout the entire event.
“Rhondda Radio, as ever, also did a great job of keeping everyone going with some foot-tapping tunes.”
Leanne added: “We all know someone who has been affected by cancer. I walked in memory of my wonderful nana, Eunice James, who passed away with cancer just a month before my teenage daughter was born. We were very close and I still miss her every day.
“My close friend and party colleague Steffan Lewis AM is also fighting stage 4 cancer with typical gutsy determination for him.
“The thousands of pounds we all raised on the day will, through Y Bwthyn unit at the Royal Glamorgan, make a big impact to the many people fighting this cruel disease. With that in mind, it was an honour to take part.”
