Rhondda AM Leanne Wood has thanked people who contributed to a Christmas food collection for homeless people.
For the second consecutive year, Ms Wood set up a collection point at her Porth office for the Adref Christmas Hamper appeal which will now distribute food parcels to homeless people in time for December 25th.
Adref are a charity which has been providing support to homeless people in Rhondda Cynon Taf and Merthyr since 1990. Among the several boxes and bags of non-perishable food items donated to Ms Wood’s office were a considerable amount of women’s sanitary products – items that homeless women often struggle to afford.
Rather than providing a food donation, one couple donated their winter fuel payment to Adref after seeing Leanne’s appeal on social media.
“I would like to thank all the generous people that contributed to this year’s collection for the Adref Christmas Hamper appeal,” Leanne said. “These food parcels can make a real difference this Christmas to someone, or some family, in difficult circumstances.
“Homelessness can affect anyone, at any time. It is great that there is so much compassion in our society for those who don’t have much – particularly at Christmas time when there is so much pressure on people to spend lots and consume lots.
“I would also like to thank the couple who donated their winter fuel payment after reading of my appeal on social media. Their cheque to Adref will make a real difference this Christmas.”
