Plaid Cymru’s Leanne Wood will be collecting food for Christmas hampers for homeless people once again this year.
The Rhondda AM will be welcoming donations of non-perishable food to her constituency office on Pontypridd Road, Porth, following on from the resounding success of last year’s effort on behalf of Adref, a local homeless charity.
Local people brought carrier bags containing hundreds of items of food altogether to the office last year which, when combined with the other collections on behalf of Adref, made up 113 hampers.
This year the charity is also asking for toiletries and personal hygiene items to be donated along with the usual items of tinned food, tea, coffee, drinking chocolate, biscuits, chocolate, jams, crisps, dried milk, sugar, juice, squash as well as ‘Christmas goodies and gifts.’
“Last year we were inundated with donations from generous Rhondda people,” said Leanne. “This was testament to our famous community spirit. I am once again opening my office doors for food collections because Christmas can be a distressing time for those in need and this is one way we can show those people that they are thought about and cared for.
“Homelessness is an increasing problem in Wales so there is a need for people to provide help now more than ever. No matter how small the donation, every little bit helps.
“My office is open during office hours every weekday for anyone wishing to help this hamper appeal.”
Joy Bishop from Adref said: “After the success of the last few Adref Hamper Campaigns, it is our pleasure to be working with Leanne Wood's Office again in 2017.
“This will build on previous successes and help us spread a little Christmas joy to those who, through no fault of their own, have drawn life’s short straw and who likely will only have, what we distribute, to open this Christmas morning.”
