DWP Debt Management Centre, Porth

DWP Don't close the Debt Management Centre in Porth

DWP_llun.JPGThe proposed closure of the Department for Work and Pension’s Debt Management Centre in Porth will have a devastating impact in the Rhondda.  More than 90 people are employed at this facility in Oldway House on the edge of the town centre.  For many of the staff, a transfer to Caerffili – as suggested by the DWP – would not be practical or even possible in some cases.

Many local businesses in the town centre also rely on the custom provided by local workers.  If you agree that the DWP should rethink and retain what is Wales’ only DWP debt management centre, please sign the petition below.  Please forward to friends and family to sign as well.

Here is part of the letter that Leanne has written to the DWP ....

Benefits processing that was administered in Porth and Tonypandy already moved to Merthyr Tydfil and Caerphilly some years ago. The widely reported high sickness levels probably influenced the decision making so that more jobs became available there. Since then, there has also been a great deal of investment to create even more jobs, especially in Merthyr Tydfil. Now Debt Management is relocating from the Rhondda. Can’t the UK Government see that the Rhondda also needs investment or it will just become the next big problem area.
